Three months ago I found myself a new job/internship at Ultimaking ltd. It’s a company that sells and develops open source 3D printers, this one named: The ultimaker an affordable 3D printed that allows people to locally print almost any designable object. This machine is a new 3D-printer that can print objects out of thermoplastics like ABS and PLA. The 3D printer comes as kit, so you have to assemble it yourself but it does not require special skills or tools. The only tool you need, 1 hexagon screwdriver, comes within the kit.

This machine is opening a new world of fabrication for me and will effect my way of working and pushes me in new direction. Today I started to write on a blog about my experiences with this machine. I welcome you to Printsionary.

Wolfgang Tillmans and the movie Kids

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

In this essay I like to discuss similarity between the artist Wolfgang Tillmans and Larry Clarks movie Kids. The artist Wolfgang Tillmans is a photographer who tells a story about the environment where he lives in. His work together shows a perspective on a generation that is often treated as the border of our society such as gays, punks and activists. The movie Kids by Larry Clark is a day in the life story about rebellious teens who are mainly dealing with sex, violence, alcohol and drugs. The youth in society are always trying to find their own form of expression in life and testing the borders of their own limits.

DEFLECTING PARTICLES

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Deflecting Particles is an interactive kinetic installation mainly made out of wood, dowels and balloons. By turning the lever of the machine you decide if the balloons turn counterclockwise or clockwise.

Autumn 2011
120 cm in diameter

320 cm high
MDF, metal, bolt, ring and nuts, bearings, 800 dowels, screws, black balloons, helium.

Wind is a flow of gases on a large scale, the natural movement of particles in the atmosphere. Caused by horizontal air pressure where the strength and direction is influenced by earths rotation in friction with the surface. The image of the rotating balloons are a visual translation for the movement of wind flows on earth.  It is prominent in the movement of clouds around low-pressure area’s. Clouds don’t move to the center of a low-pressure area, they move around it and in a form of spinning. By moving the arm of this installation you decide if the flows moves as on the southern hemisphere, clockwise, or as on the northern hemisphere, counterclockwise.

Iphone app: Dorian Pitch 1.0

This application is meant to use your movement as an extra effect while you play piano on your Iphone, based on Dorian Concept’s manner of play. In this way you are free to dance, play a Midi keyboard and adjust the sound by moving the device around its axis, which makes you less static as an musician. this app is capable of producing sounds by generating digital signal of different frequencies, like a synthesizer. It is my ode to the musician Dorian Concept. Inspired by his productions, how he use his instrument and his name.

Tensao em torno do Douro

This project started in Porto, Portugal. I had the assignment for photography(school) to make a series of photo’s and make a typology out of that. The name Tensao em torno do douro means potential (voltage) around the douro (the river in the city Porto). I my holiday i came to a collection of typical looking transform houses with wires above the ground coming in and out. When I was back home I mirrored these series to my own situation and start researching and how the potential voltage moves in my own environment. The final collection of pictures is a route to my neighbourhood of transmator fields, a place where the electricity will be devided to the neighborhoods and houses. [fbshare]

Interactive Data visualisation Installation

Input for this installation was the movie Soy Cuba. After taking a lot of data out of the movie I pixelated it and project it with a beamer on 20 motors with mirrors. How the motors move depends on the tint of each pixel what is projected on the motors.

CONSIDER REFLECTION

This kinetic installation found his origin in a drawing of negative space based on a collection of objects. My instrument make the user observe this specific shape from multiple angels. The project developed itself over a few weeks, this is what finally came out of it.
